Sunlit Hands Holding Marine Mineral Powder

Long before barrier care became a skincare priority, Phytomer was exploring the importance of minerals to healthy, resilient skin. Its pioneering seawater concentrate, Oligomer®, remains a compelling expression of that thinking.

For skin professionals, some of the most interesting ingredients are those that bring us back to the fundamentals. How does the epidermis renew itself? What helps it retain moisture? And what supports its ability to withstand daily environmental stress?

Minerals are involved in all these processes. They participate in cellular signalling, enzyme activity and the formation of the skin’s protective barrier. Understanding their role gives Phytomer’s signature ingredient a fascinating relevance to contemporary professional skincare.

From seawater to skincare

Created in 1972, Oligomer® is Phytomer’s exclusive, sodium reduced seawater concentrate. Its production process, protected by a manufacturing secret, captures a complex mixture of marine minerals and trace elements for use in skincare and professional treatments. It was the brand’s first creation and remains central to its marine identity more than five decades later.

Its mineral profile includes magnesium, calcium and potassium, alongside trace quantities of elements such as zinc, copper and manganese. This breadth of composition makes Oligomer particularly interesting: it brings together several elements that also have established roles in skin biology.

To appreciate the ingredient, it helps to look more closely at what those minerals do.

Magnesium and calcium: a remarkable relationship with the epidermis

The epidermis is constantly renewing itself. As keratinocytes move towards the surface, they mature into the specialised cells that form the stratum corneum, the skin’s outer protective layer.

Calcium is an important signal in this maturation process. Magnesium also influences keratinocyte behaviour, and the relationship between the two minerals matters. In laboratory research published in 2025, changing calcium and magnesium concentrations affected keratinocyte proliferation, migration and the expression of genes associated with differentiation. The findings underline how closely mineral balance relates to epidermal function.

For therapists, this brings mineral science directly into the conversation about barrier care. A well-functioning epidermis depends on carefully regulated biological processes, with minerals participating in the signals that help organise them.

There is also human research supporting the skin relevance of mineral bathing. A study of people with atopic dry skin found that bathing in a magnesium rich Dead Sea salt solution improved hydration and barrier function and reduced inflammation. This was a study of a different mineral preparation, rather than Oligomer, but it provides valuable evidence for the wider relationship between mineral solutions and skin condition.

Zinc, copper and manganese: small quantities, significant biological roles

Trace elements earn their name from the tiny quantities in which they occur. Their biological importance can be considerable.

Copper and zinc are components of an antioxidant enzyme called superoxide dismutase. A manganese dependent form of this enzyme also exists. Researchers have identified these enzymes in human skin, where they participate in the systems that manage reactive oxygen species.

This gives professionals another reason to take mineral science seriously. The skin’s natural defences depend partly on highly specialised enzymes, and those enzymes depend on particular elements.

These physiological roles help explain the interest in Oligomer’s composition. They should be distinguished from evidence that a finished cosmetic delivers a particular antioxidant or barrier result, which depends on its complete formulation, concentration and testing.

What does Oligomer offer the skin?

Oligomer crystals

Phytomer positions Oligomer as a remineralising ingredient that helps fortify the epidermis and support cellular vitality. In its current product information, the brand describes its contribution to stronger skin with greater resistance to external aggression.

The ingredient also has a place in the sensory experience of professional care. In Phytomer’s reported satisfaction study, two groups of 26 volunteers took two baths weekly over 28 days, using either Oligomer Pure or water without it. After one month, 80% of the Oligomer group reported soothed skin. The brand also reported feelings of rest and reduced tension after a single bath. These are subjective findings, but they offer a useful perspective on the ingredient’s role in a restorative treatment experience.

Why Phytomer builds around Oligomer

Oligomer provides a consistent expression of Phytomer’s formulation philosophy: marine ingredients selected to support the skin, combined with actives chosen for specific concerns.

It is best understood as a signature active foundation across much of the range. Individual products have their own formulation bases and ingredient combinations.

In Oligoforce Advanced, for example, Phytomer combines Oligomer with Marine Eternal blue microalgae in a serum developed for hydration, wrinkles and dark spots. In Oligoforce Lumination masks, it sits alongside niacinamide, adenosine and brown algae. Each formula gives the marine mineral concentrate a different professional application.

For salons, spas and clinics, this creates a meaningful education opportunity. Oligomer opens a conversation about the skin’s underlying needs, from epidermal organisation to comfort and resilience, before moving into targeted correction.

Its enduring appeal lies in that combination of scientific curiosity and practical treatment relevance. A seawater concentrate developed more than fifty years ago continues to invite a thoroughly modern question: how much more can we achieve when we give the skin’s fundamental biology the attention it deserves?
